Head Boy!

Well who’d have thought?…. a lovely end of the week surprise….We’ve got a Head Boy in the house! …. little dreams do come true and we couldn’t be prouder and more delighted for Sam and very grateful to fab teachers and ta’s, friends and family who support and steer him in the right direction.

I have a very clear memory of Sam – when he was 4 years old he ran out of school, eyes sparkling, mop of messy curls falling in his eyes and he quite matter of factly said ‘When I’m in year 6 I’m going to be head boy’ he then said ‘…and I’ve told Mrs Sibbald!’ I remember having a mixture of emotions- on the one hand I was mildly surprised at my child’s confidence, embarrassed by his slightly precocious attitude and protective in that I didn’t want him to set himself up to fail but equally I had great admiration as he talked in detail on how he would approach his journey through school in order to achieve his wish. I remember thinking ‘Wow! I wish I had your confidence to dream big, to not be afraid of failing and to have total belief in myself.’

Fast forward six years- six years of ups and downs as Sam has navigated his way through primary school- some years better than others but always with a nod towards his hope to be Head Boy….. and now Sam is in year 6.

On Friday they had their beginning of term service and Sam did achieve his little dream of being ‘Head Boy’ and I am so, so delighted for him. Delighted that he dared to aim big and that this little dream, which means the world to him, has come true because very rarely do plans in life work out and you get to accomplish exactly what you hope for and life is very rarely cloudless but for this moment it has worked out as planned. This may very well be the only time in Sam’s life that things work out so smoothly and I’d like to think that if he hadn’t achieved being ‘Head Boy’ he would have coped well with the disappointment -because I strongly believe that it’s always how hard you work that matters and that the result is the least important thing but on this occasion we’re going to celebrate the achievement whilst remembering win or lose we’re always proud and forever on Sam’s team.

Christchurch Eye October Publication

The unedited version…because it’s a lot more interesting!

“Run Mummy, run!”…and suddenly I feel all strong and determined to not let him down, to model to him that I’m trying, as I desperately try to get to end of the road where he is sat casually on the street sign waiting for me to catch my breath. We arrive home and a little voice shouts from upstairs “Where have you been?”…and I reply back with satisfaction“I’ve been running”, as another child picks up my trainers and exclaims “actually these trainers are quite nice”.  I pick up my phone, text a friend and casually drop in ‘just back from running’ and feel ridiculously proud.

Being a Mum is fabulous but let’s be honest it’s also really hard; it’s exhausting, it pushes our limits and pulls on our emotions. One of the most important pieces of advice a friend gave to me was, if you want to help your family be the best they can be, focus first on being the best you can be.  Wow, it’s so simple and I tell my children this all the time but when you’re up to your eyes with everyone and everything – it’s sometimes tricky to see. I want my children to think of me as someone who loves them 100%, supports them and is their biggest cheer leader but I also want them to see that I invest in my own continuous pursuit of well being and happiness and follow my own passions, dreams and value my mind, body and heart.

So aware of the importance of having entertaining hobbies and interests outside of being a mum I’ve started running again – I’m not very good, I don’t run fast or competitively and I’m only just beginning to put the fear of looking stupid aside but I love that in a really small way I’m modelling to my children to have a go and not worry if you are not the best.

The Sildamax works over all those biological condition which cialis 40 mg http://greyandgrey.com/third-department-cases-4-18-13/ hinders the generation of sexual feeling in women. If the sphincter of Oddi browse around that website viagra prices canada opens, gallbladder contracts. Thus, with stronger blood cialis generika flow to the penile region. One can get this condition in inheritance or due to cialis prescription continue reading address excessive smoking.
I’m running with my children, on my own, with a super fit friend (we’ve all got one!) and in a running group and I love them all for completely different reasons. It makes me feel confident as I do something for myself and recognise my own self worth; I think as my feet bang down onto the pavement in time to the music thumping in my ears and I dig deep to run through the piercing side cramp when I run with my son and I laugh whilst I run with a group of friends.

Message from this is get out there and do something active.  Choose something to do this month to make it more fun and more productive – not a to do list but something which will make you feel happy and strong and that stretches you to do a little bit more than you thought you were capable of. If you’re interested in running and fancy running in a group around Christchurch area on a Thursday morning- email runwithkim@gmail.com – beginners very welcome and if you’re already a runner sign up for the Two Riversmeet Christchurch 10 km on October 16th or be inspired and support the runners. There’s even a fun run for the kids to get involved in.

My October challenge is about to commence- I’m going to run more than once a week! I’ll be running with all my good intentions in the direction of becoming better and stronger. My enthusiasm is all pumped up; I’ll be timing my feet to hit the ground on the downbeat of “You’ve got the love”, pacing my breaths and rocking my new trainers and I have a feeling that I might begin to love it and hey even if I don’t then at least there’s a fleeting chance I’ll be able to keep up with my crazy crew of boys and wake up each day and hit the ground running….. And little thing I’ve found… Playing the Rocky theme song on repeat, immediately cuts the required effort in half on any run!

Three hundred words on the nose this time – seriously this is so much harder than it looks!

Summer has always suited our boys; the unhurried rhythm, the wide open spaces, the freedom, not to mention the ‘yes’ moments to ice cream. I wish we could bottle that feeling and keep it with us all year. Hopefully a few more weeks of warmth remain, but the starting of school marks a sort of farewell to summer in my head.

‘See ya next year summer! Hello school!’ Time to officially remember what day of the week it is as I start to feel excited, nervous, proud and sad to say ‘Where has the summer gone?’ Thankfully we have this wonderful thing called ‘everyday’ to return to. The comforts of home, routines and structure –the ‘everyday’ – and we love that too.

Our children will have grown in independence and so I feel confident that they are ready for their respective challenges and they will pull from the stash of love, bravery and confidence that has been poured into them these last six weeks to find security and happiness in their new situations. Uniforms will be ironed, special lunches made and together we’ll navigate our way through the bubbling cauldron of other children and parents. I’ll wave them off happily and they’ll go and explore a new world of their own. I hope they have inspiring teachers and grow in their depth and understanding of the world to become more compassionate, logical and imaginative but mostly, I wish them a happy school year with their friends.

So ‘Let the wild rumpus begin!’ – the balancing of home, kids, work, homework, fun and chores – We can do this!

Happy new school year to anyone returning to education – wishing you fun and adventures on your journey and to those back on the school run – time to move forward and enjoy the ‘everyday’.

But first a little flashback to our brill summer holiday – watching this makes me smile so much and feel super proud of our big family.  I always hoped for a big family and I’m now becoming more realistic in knowing that it all comes with lots of ‘bigs’ like:  big feelings, big fall outs, big opinions, big noise, big messes, big bills, big planning, big patience, big washing piles, big decisions, big tiredness, big sacrifices but I’m also so grateful that the love between us all is always big enough to cover all the above stresses.

Christchurch Eye July Publication.

Again, another super long starting piece for the Christchurch Eye, which had to be edited down from 800 words to 300!  I hope I get better at this!

‘Hurray! We’ve completed the ‘marathon week’ – otherwise known as the last few days of school and the carefree contentment of summer is slowly creeping into our routine and do I dare jinx it and say we are falling into a fairly pleasant summer rhythm? The ‘summer bucket list’ ideas are providing a constant invitation to satiate our appetite for adventure and conversations start with ‘Let’s do, Let’s go, Let’s find’ and I love it. But I’m well aware that this school summer holiday is a long old race and we’re going have to pace ourselves if we’re to survive until September when school restarts at 8.40am. But hey who’s counting?

So we’re busy creating happy memories, which will stick in my children’s minds long after the sand has been washed off and the buckets and spades packed away and to be honest I’m enjoying it all as much as them because I want my boys to have some of the summer memories that I have. We all have childhood memories which we want to protect our children from – divorce, bullying, broken friendships or struggling in school – But summer has the potential to bring out the best in many families and I’m making certain it brings out the best in ours. So we’ll be repeating my favourite parts of childhood and together we’ll add in a few of our own – because although I can’t control parenthood, how we spend the next few weeks is something I can influence and I’m going to make sure that we fly this holiday flag really high, making sure that whatever the weather our summer is colourful and fun.

We’ll be welcoming in the holiday season by watching ‘Summer Spectacular’ at the Regent Centre performed by The Glad Rag from the 27th – 30th July, enjoying Stompin’ on the Quomps on the 6th August and joining in the fun at Christchurch regatta, fun fair, carnival and fireworks on August 13th -14th. And these big moments will be interspersed with doing the harbour walk, dingying down the Stour, charity shop book hunt, rotating between the beach, pool and splash park, having a summer film night, chalk drawing on the patio, playing in the paddling pool, blowing bubbles anywhere, taking a train ride or bus trip, sand castle building with a moat and a flag, buying water melon at the market, making a tee pee, having evening picnics, going on a bear hunt, having a rain dance, face painting, duck feeding, shadow dancing, splashing in puddles, making morning pancakes, playing uno and making up our own memory games, puppet shows, hula hooping, boat trip down the Stour, look at the view, camps with friends, decorating the car windows with catchy phrases like ‘are we there yet’, fruit picking, sparklers on the cliff top, trying to catch fish, catching grass hoppers, homemade dens with bin bags and pegs and cushions, sibling Olympics in the garden and mini olympics at the beach inspired by the Rio olympics, wave jumping and body boarding, skim boarding and sprinklers, walks around Stanpit, family moon walk, water balloon fight, eat breakfast for dinner, flying a kite, paddle boarding, watching the sun set, sleepover with friends, make friendship bracelets, summer playlist, torch light scavenger hunt, spa night, random acts of kindness and then if the planets align – hopefully a meal out ‘sans’ kids for Jez and I.

.. Aren’t we lucky to be able to do all this in Christchurch and the surrounding areas? – as I tell the boys almost every day!

But be in no doubt that these wonderful plans will all be weathered by reality because no-one gets to dodge the rubbish bits in life fully – there’ll be more messes to clear up, more arguments, kids will wreck havoc and we’ll have the inevitable stir craziness, the ‘Can we’, ‘Can you’ followed by ‘I’m bored’ comments and the reapplying of sunscreen on little moving bodies will test my patience but it will be entirely worth all the efforts put into this summer. Even the bit of arriving ‘in style’ at the beach – me feeling hot, sweaty and ladened with random bags, towels, toys balanced precariously and spades dropping off the buggy whilst I attempt to pull it across the sand or the hideous leaving the park moments where ‘two more minutes’ turns in to ‘I’m not gonna ask you again’ which turns into a fake ‘I’m leaving!’ strop.

So much potential and possibility… so many things you could do and achieve…. and hopefully sunshine beckons so we can all enjoy a cheerful dose of summery things. Wishing you a wonderful, warm, sand filled summer. What summer memory from your childhood are you most looking forward to passing on to your own children?

Oh my goodness – it’s so long! Below is the published piece which Jez had to edit down for me as I’m obviously so precious about my words.

…and I got a little reminder that I had to stick to no more than 300 words from the magazine.

Life Lately!

Yesterday marked the end of another school year and as always it had all the normal end of term madness to accompany it!

However the end of year service was my first service in ten year where I didn’t have to negotiate with a bored toddler throughout the service – which made it a rather special occasion in itself!

Christchurch Eye

Ever since I was at school I’ve always been the type of person who sees an advert, a request for help in a school newsletter and feels that this is a direct and personal invitation asking for me to do whatever is being asked.  However in recent years I feel I’ve become less good at contributing and volunteering so when I saw the little advert in our local ‘Christchurch Eye’ magazine asking for a ‘Mum’ to write a little column on a monthly basis I felt that I should try this out.

Now this column is only between 250-300 words – which for me is proving tricky!  So what follows is the first unedited version – all 689 words of it!

‘Hi I’m Hilary and this is my first Mum’s the Word column. I’m Mum to five boys and I love it; It’s hard work, funny, exhausting and rewarding in equal measure and celebrating family and life’s simple joys are what I love most.   I’d be delighted to share bits and pieces of our family’s adventures in and around Christchurch with you.

Excitement brews in our house as we are nearly at the end of the school term: the ceremonious countdown has begun and the unraveling of the ribbon to summer freedom. Homework is being done at speed, we’re scraping in through the school gate just in time, school shoes are scruffy and white shirts are a long way off white but we are nearly there. The summer prequel of school trips, achievement evenings, end of term shows and leavers assemblies are about to mark the end of another school year.

But my mental inspiration mood board is brimming with summer holiday rituals – I can taste it in the air and I can’t wait for summer to unravel with all its colour and splendor so we can drink it up in huge gulps. I can’t wait for the carefree contentment of summer to slowly creep into our routine and I am welcoming it with open arms. My little boys are dreaming of riding bikes, climbing trees, mummy saying yes to stepping into the sprinkler, more ice creams, late nights and pyjama mornings, rolling down banks and den building and I’m dreaming of concentrated happiness – where days are longer and busier doing nothing, children are dirtier, bedtimes later and mornings stress free. I can’t wait – a chance to recharge and regroup.

That’s what summer does – it inspires me to try to create a magical land of happy memories and colourful days for my children, which will stick in their minds long after the sand has been washed off and the buckets and spades packed away. To create a summer tapestry, where all the good things that we enjoy all year round like being outside, spending time with each other and friends and having fun are done but the dial is turned up just a little bit more because we have time.

So in this final lap I’m marrying my kids and my enthusiasm for summer fun, family and adventure and we are writing our own summer bucket list. I’m writing them down early so I don’t have to scramble for ideas later just in case I run out of this Summer steam! It’s an opportunity to pull all our ideas together in one place and to provide a constant invitation to satiate our appetite for adventure. And whether we do all the things on the list doesn’t really matter because just by simply writing a Summer Bucket list it is super exciting – almost like a trailor for a really good film. The conversations start with ‘Let’s do, Let’s go, Let’s find’ and I love it.

So no doubt we will swarm to the splash park when the sun is hot and high, we’ll do the let’s have people over at the last minute, the evening dinners at the beach and the impromptu meet ups which become less and less possible once your kids are in school, camping adventures and random road trips and even mundane errands will take on a new vibe in summer.

But be in no doubt that there’ll be messes to clear up, more arguments, kids will wreck havoc and …..     but watching my children being ridiculously happy and summer satisfied will make me so happy knowing that their childhood memory books are being written.

Oh how I love Summer! So much potential and possibility… so many things you could do and achieve…. and hopefully sunshine beckons. Have a fabulous July and feel free in joining me in thinking of your own summer bucket list – making sure you cross things off in bright colour co-ordinated pens. Together let’s make summer flourish, be it slowly, quietly, purposefully or fast, full on and hanging on for the ride….whatever your summer holidays hold, may it bring you much happiness.’

Our bucket lists….. unfortunately done really quite messily by the older two!

Sports Day 2016

‘To pay attention -this is our endless and proper work’ Mary Oliver.

image

Time is a thief! Today I celebrated watching my first school sports day, entirely on my own – no newborn baby in a buggy to rock, no toddler to feed snacks to and no pre schooler to do the pre school race.  And I’m so proud of all our boys, who keep on growing up and reaching new milestones and making their own path into the world  while I clap and cheer for them – half wanting them to slow down and half being insanely proud of everything they are doing.

I have so many school sports day memories – good and bad! Bringing Harry to Ollie’s first sports day when he was less than 24 hours old and having to help Sam in the toddler race, wheeling the buggy up and down the edge of the track, one hand balancing the video camera , watching Ollie stomp off in a strop across the field, Jamie coming in 2nd in his 400metre race, seeing Winchester finally win the cup and being sad that Ollie wasn’t there to lift the cup as sports captain, pimms and strawberries, blaring heat to umbrellas up, cheering my children’s names loud and proud, Jamie looking terrified in class R when he stood on the line, Ollie with his miniature teddy and then missing the go as he was too busy talking to the supporters, tunnel ball, bean bag relay, under cover breast feeding, cuddling babies and desperate exhaustion from trying to balance it all but over all such happy, happy memories.

….. and then here I stand today- fully rested, no snot, no milk on my shoulder, no baby to rock and no toddler to chase and I am loving this next stage but it is so, so true- time passes so quickly.  I’m so pleased I was able to enjoy it all.

All the boys- big and small got an extra squeeze tonight.
