Party Planning

There is a birthday happening in our house very soon….

Parties are my thing – not big wild drunk booze filled, crazy dancing and loud music styleee parties (although if the planets aligned and by some crazy way someone could organise that I could get away with going to one of these parties and dancing and drinking the night away and still wake up hangover free with a tidy house and happy contented kids  I would bite their arm off) but in the Birthday Party Styleee kind of party.  And so the countdown is on for Ollie’s 7th Birthday and so the preparations have begun.  Ollie has drawn his invite – unicorns and butterflies for the girls and rockets for the boys and he has written down all the things that he would like to happen at his party.  Things like doing an assault course, eating hot dogs and doughnuts, a team challenge, watch a film, play on the Wii and the trampoline and so the challenge is on to organise all of this into three and half hours to make Ollie’s dream party come true.

Will it be worth all the effort? Oh yes it will always be worth it because there is nothing better than celebrating the day one of our children entered into the world and joined us.  And hey we may be spoiling him, but on the anniversary of his arrival I want him to feel completely truly special, to know what it feels like to be celebrated and I will do everything I can to make it happen just they way he wants it to.

And so when he has his party on May 13th we will celebrate and be thankful for another year with Ollie and make fun and exciting wishes for the next!… just got to go and book the bouncy castle assault course!

Firsts

At the start of this week we took a quick first trip of the year to the Waterpark at Christchurch Quay.  This is a park that we love, a park that we often call into after school but this was the first time that the water sprinklers had been put back on – a true sign that summer is starting. So this was exciting stuff!!  We arrived to be greeted by half of Christchurch and Sam quickly teamed up with best friend Brodie.  Sam absolutely loves Brodie, together they talk endlessly about the wonders of Batman and Power Rangers and how much they love Lego Star Wars and together they make quite a dynamic duo.  So they spent a happy hour running in and out of the water jets and Ollie escaped the water park to practice his favourite park activity of crossing the monkey bars.  Harry on the other hand stayed very close to us, occasionally getting brave and tottering off to the paddling pool edge where he would carefully dip his toe in then totter back.  And so this went on for about fifty minutes until he borrowed a ball from Brodie and with the ball by his side there was no stopping him.  He rolled it and kicked it happily around the busy waterpark until a slightly bigger, quicker more co-ordinated toddler took a shine to the ball kicking activity and took the ball.  Luckily for Harry the benefit of having an older brother kicked in as Ollie kindly but firmly grabbed the ball back.  It is one of my biggest hopes for my boys that they will always look out for each other and care and help each other when needed.

The trip was rounded off nicely with the first park ice cream of the year where we were once again reminded of how lucky we are to live in this part of the world.

In other good news – our lovely friend Jake has returned home after a long week in Poole hospital and we are delighted to know that him and his very lovely Mummy Helen are back with the rest of their family.  I spoke to Helen while Jake was in Poole hospital and again I was reminded of what a wonderful job the Drs and nurses on the Children’s Ward do.  They cared so well for Archie and I when we were in hospital before Christmas and again they did the business for Jake and his family when they needed them.  I know that it is their job but they do it very well and we and many other families who have been through the experience of having a poorly child are very grateful for their brilliance!

Much love to our friends the Taylors.  We are so pleased that you are together again .

Robin Hood, Ropewalk Chambers, Nottingham and Granny

Just returned from a two day away trip to visit my just turned 91 year old granny who lives up near where I spent my formative years in Nottingham.  Granny’s been in hospital for a fair bit recently and just returned home, so because it was the Easter holidays, we decided it would be good to go up and introduce Archie to her.  The drive to Nottingham is a pain in the arse and we weren’t keen on doing it, save for the fact that we would see Granny at the other end, and in fact it turned out to be a wicked couple of days.  Granny was on top form considering how many years she has tucked up under her belt, and it was a pleasure just to spend some time with her and chat about stuff, including sorting out her Sky television issue.

The legend wot is Granny, and the boyz.

The boys were generally very well behaved and the weather was very kind, allowing them to muck around loads in her garden which is ridiculously well grassed – testament to the fact it isn’t constantly being battered by children running around on it… apart from today and yesterday.

Harry kindly gave them a head start

An unforseen bonus of the excursion ‘oop North was the chance to revisit some of the many memories I have of my home town.  Driving through the centre I became a complete bore, pointing out sites of interest that were clearly not of interest to anyone other than myself.   However, I was selfish enough to drive up to 24, the Ropewalk, the scene of many, many years of my Dad’s life while he was working as a barrister.

Driving around those roads was strangely warming – roads that are associated so definitely and clearly with what Dad did and who he was, all through my childhood.  In many ways I felt myself back in those years when I used to occasionally walk with him around those pavements or for some reason visit the office on a Saturday morning and  tread in fear of setting off THE ALARM by putting one foot out of position….  Very life after death.  Of course, they’ve modernised the front of the building now so it’s all glitz, glass and silver lettering showing their importance.  Dad wouldn’t have liked it, I don’t think.

Who you gonna call?

Anyway, after my little selfish moment, we went to visit the Robin Hood statue.  I’ve never felt touristy in Nottingham at all, it all just seemed normal as I grew up, however today I was really excited to be there with the boys and Hilary, looking up at the castle and talking about the Sheriff of Nottingham and the caves etc.  We did the ultimate tourist thing, posing by the statue of good ol’ Robin himself, posing with our imaginary bows and arrows, just across the road from the Castle bar where I attended my 6th form ball…. different times!

Boyz and the Hood

Leaving Granny was much, much harder than I had anticipated.  She is an old lady, on her own, facing decisions that many old people face about their future.  It was very sad, and we didn’t want to leave.  She’ll be watching the snooker while I write this post, and I know feeling happy that we were able to pop by for a couple of days, albeit briefly.  Archie was wonderful, smiling at all the right times and it was great to be able to share him with her.

The conflict of our decision to maintain a diary in this way is that there are things that happen that you do not write about as it may infringe on the privacy of someone else.  I know, however, that some of the conversations I had with Granny reflect the same conversations many people have with elderly relatives regarding their future and their conflicting and often confusing emotional attachments.  It’s just very sad that there are no easy answers.

We had a wicked two days in Nottingham, and alongside the lovely memories can’t help but feel a sense of sadness that we are so far away.  Granny Trembath – what a woman.

April Memory making

I am a Mummy, a wife, a teacher, a friend, a sister, a daughter, a party organiser, a have-a-go jogger and craft maker but tonight I am going to try something new – a first for me… I am going to become a ‘Blogger!’ and as I sit here staring at this blank and unfamiliar screen layout I feel a range of emotions – mildly anxious as though I am about to sit a GCSE English exam, excited because it is about time that I did something new and annoyance as Jeremy walks past me and peeks over my shoulder at the screen which is still blank and makes some flippant comment of ‘Just write something – anything!’.

So here it goes, a short post to share the start of the Easter holidays in the Payne family.

Sometimes when I am tired, run down and busy I forget to truly see all the very lovely things that happen in our family, with our friends and in the world around us, so sometimes I go and click through some of the hundreds and thousands of recent and old photos that sit hidden on our computer, filed neatly into labelled folders and as they flash up on the screen they instantly make me aware of how lucky I am to have the family, the friends and life that I have. These photos enable me to reflect clearly and purposefully and see how we are growing as a family and how all the small everyday things that we do combine to create wonderful experiences for our boys and us. Many simple experiences which I hope will somewhere in my boys little brains be stored and remembered and turned into happy memories.  Memories which they will will one day laugh about or try to recreate in their own families.

And so having just looked through our photos from the start of April here are my April memory making moments! Enjoy!

Archie enjoying the first proper sunshine of the year, staring up at the beautiful blossom on our apple tree.

Unfortunately you can’t see the blossom but it is beautiful, I promise and I know Archie loves his moments bonding with nature.

The boys being brave and crazy and choosing to go swimming at the start of April and being thoroughly encouraged by us saying ‘I bet you won’t …..’ ‘It’s far too cold for you’ etc!

So enjoying being part of our wonderful friends Jo and Jim’s big day for their little beautiful man ‘Baby Matthew’.

He has a very lovely family and the boys and I had a super time celebrating him and all he brings to his family and wider groups of friends.  Jo, or Auntie Jo as she now seems to have become, is one of my best friends, someone who I met at university where we had a shared love for 80’s tunes, alcopops and dressing up in rubbish costumes. Today, nearly 12 years on we both have lots of children and who’d have thought that we would love each other’s children so much and that our children would also love each other so.  And although we do the Mummy thing now, I am so looking forward to our girly night out in a couple of weeks where we will drink wine, totter around in a pair of heels and giggle all night.

The excitement of finding toad spawn (thank you Granny) by the edge of the reservoir on Dartmoor and chasing it with the net until it was finally caught and splatted into the awaiting bucket.  Ollie was beside himself with excitement and has grand plans for these thousands of toads that he hopes will grow from the stringy sloppy mess that now lives in a big bucket in our garden.  Have your fingers crossed for our nature loving little boy Ollie!  I promise all toads will be well cared for

A good old Easter stomp across Dartmoor. Something which I take so much delight in mainly because I can still remember how much I enjoyed my family trips up to Dartmoor –  seeing my boys playing by the river, racing along moorland tracks, avoiding horse poo, pretending to be Dartmoor ponies and climbing tors is just brilliant.

So our stomp involved lugging rucksacks filled with wonderful picnic food, a baby in a sling, a toddler initially protesting about walking but then insisting that he ran and jumped everywhere on his own, three bigger boys swinging nets and climbing rocks and jumping over the moorland like mountain goats and Grandparents who walked quicker, carried more bags and played more with the children than Jez and I.  A thoroughly enjoyable day topped off by the fact that the Easter Bunny paid a surprise visit.  We love the Easter Bunny!

Seeing our wonderful friends Nicki and Neil with our boys.  These two people care for our boys as if they were their own children and I feel very lucky to have them as part of our family.  They, too, go a long way in helping create amazing experiences for our boys and we are very grateful for the love and care that they show us and our children.  On this occasion they looked after all our boys whilst we visited Down Syndrome Education Centre in Portsmouth (an experience we will write about in more detail soon).

Teaching Ollie to give Archie a bottle. Initially he was proud and then he was bored and had to be bribed with the option to watch Phineas and Ferb while he fed him.  You can see his eyes being drawn to the TV but his arms remained tight around Archie throughout.Teaching Jamie to do Archie’s sound cards with him.  A pretty tall order for a nine year old bearing in mind that Archie simply stares back at you as you say the sounds and loses concentration within seconds.  But Jamie stuck it out like a true professional speech therapist.

I feel so proud watching my boys with Archie – the way they quietly show their love for him by stroking his head, rubbing his tummy, reacting to his smile or holding his tiny hand in theirs and I know that this quiet unspoken love will grow and grow.

Sunday afternoons playing in the garden.  It thrills me no end that I get to watch my boys playing and laughing and shouting together in the garden.  Today’s game was aptly named ‘the superman game’ and you can probably see why from the photos – all that’s missing is the sound effect of them yelling ‘big superman’ or ‘small superman’ depending on the size of the jump off the swing.  I wonder if that game will be a memory maker?

I believe that making memories is an investment – a win/win and so this is a small amount of our memory making in April (in photos that only begin to capture the brilliance).  All I need to do now is click on publish and I will have become a blogger.  As Jamie would say ‘Wahoo!’

Happy April memory making x

New HBO series ‘Luck’ – starring Tom Payne, Dustin Hoffman & Nick Nolte…

Cousin Tom is getting closer and closer to the big time.  First it was ‘Casualty‘, then it was ‘Waterloo Road‘, then it was ‘Miss Pettigrew lives for a day‘.  Now he’s mid filming a hopefully massive series in America that we think will air in the UK in the back end of this year.

Lucky for Tom he shares the 'good looks' gene pool with Jeremy....

It’s only bleeding directed by Michael Mann, innit!  Tom co-stars with Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte, Michael Gambon and many others, and today HBO released a teaser trailer for the series.  Watch and enjoy!  Go Tom!  (He’s the one getting naughty with a girl whose clothes have fallen off….)

Love this film clip…

I saw this clip called ‘World Order in New York’ and couldn’t help but think of Ollie who would fall to pieces if he ever came across a group like this doing their thing.  Added to that he is permanently doing ‘the robot’ around the house at the moment – pics to come.  Sorry for the slight lack of posts recently, it’s all been quite busy and I’m trying to get a job – fail again today, unfortunately.

Anyway, enjoy the clip!

Jamie’s new birthday present.

For Jamie’s 9th birthday (9th!! crikey) we were delighted to get him a BMX type bike that he could use on the local BMX track that the boys love going on.  Having ordered and received it, I had a lovely flashback when I realised that the key element of the bike that made Jamie feel ‘rad’ and ‘cool’ (that’s an old man impression of being hip and down wit’ it, by the way) was that he could pull off proper skids with the back tyre.

I can’t wait until he’s lining up his brothers in the back garden to jump over them – ah, the memories of my own youth…!!!
