Here come the boys….!

The first team line up

Yesterday Hilary’s Mum and Dad came to see us with Auntie Heather and they brought with them an amazing present that Hilary’s cousins had made for the boys.  Bearing in mind that the first question anyone asks when you say you have five boys is something about a 5 a side football team, Frances (Hilary’s cousin) and her husband Paul put together a lovely little team strip for the boys to wear.

The reality is that we’re going to push for the boys to become a boy band because it’s much more ‘now’ than a 5-a-side team, the money’s much better and with attune anyone can sing well – it’s almost a done deal….  Anyway, for the time being, we are more than delighted to have ‘Team Payne’.

Archie’s delightful demeanour

Out of all the boys, Archie has easily been the most pleasant as a baby.  He has pretty much slept through the night from day one, he watches the world go by without complaining (although he is attentive and follows the action), he makes pleasant little noises and most gratifyingly of all, he is very willing to give anyone who passes within feet of him massive beaming smiles and little chuckles.

First thing in the morning he is at his best shortly after he has woken up, smiling at anything and everything.  We had hoped that this would happen, but the more he is with us and the more we see his personality develop, the less we are aware that he has DS and the more he becomes just Archie.

School Carnival time

Today was school carnival day at The Priory School and the children were allowed to dress in whatever clothes they wanted.  Ollie knew straight away – he wanted to be a dragon.  This was a lovely idea that we supported whole heartedly, however it was tinged with a little sadness because we also know that Ollie is pretty much reaching the end of his natural timeline to want to dress up in clothes and go out publicly.

For once, we won't be 'dragon' him to school... (I'll get me coat)

It’s not that we believe that he shouldn’t be dressing up, it’s just that his friends in his class are all pretty much at the stage where they won’t do it in public, and it’s not going to be long before Ollie becomes aware of this.  What we didn’t want was for Ollie to get to school and realise just how individual he was, however, so Hilary accommodated for him and suggested he take a bag with other clothes inside just in case he needed to change because he was cold….

Sure enough, as they reached the school crossing, Ollie looked out and saw lots of his friends dressed normally and got cold feet, rather sadly saying to Hil that he thought he should get changed into his normal clothes, which they did in the car park before walking to school, with the dragon outfit in his bag.  Bless him, though, he was determined to wear his costume and so he built up his own courage and got himself changed at lunchtime.  When Hilary came to pick the boys up, she was greeted by a cheery little dragon.  Well done Olls!!

What’s going on in Egypt?

I’m trying to write a presentation for an interview I have to do tomorrow, but have been distracted by the Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak’s speech to the nation (and the world) about whether he is going to stand down.

I was struck by this image from the BBC News showing him making his speech live alongside a shot of the crowds in Tahrir Square in Cairo.

To be honest, I don’t know a great deal about the politics of the area and what I do know has come from the news of the last weeks, following on from the uprising in Tunisia etc. so I feel I have an awareness but not an understanding because unfortunately the papers aren’t reliable anymore and TV news now has an agenda, however, what I did think, again and again was, Is this another Caecescau moment?

I can’t help noticing the similarities between the two situations 22 years later.

Amazing local view

A few weeks ago I shared some of the images of my little tumble with my now ex-car on my way to work.  Well, that’s caused a few problems, I can tell you.  I am currently using Hilary’s car, the ‘family’ car, to travel to work, which has meant that she has to walk the boys to school every day while we wait for the insurance and I have to pay twice the amount on petrol.  All very unhelpful.

Added to that, I am now a very nervous driver on the country roads which often reach -4 degrees celsius in the mornings and I know that under the car wheels there is sod all grip.  I get to work after my hours drive feeling like I have just completed a four hour exam.

The other day then, when I emerged onto the top of a hill which looks out over the last remnants of North Dorset and into Wiltshire, I was blown away by what I saw.  In fact, it was nearly car crash number two as I tried to keep my eyes on the road.

Sam’s birthday party

Sam shared his birthday party with his friend, Jude, this year.  We booked out the boy’s school hall and Jude’s parents managed to secure a bouncy castle that filled the entire thing!!  As usual, it was ‘an occasion’ and so Sam had to dress up for it.  It’s one of two things at the moment, Batman, or Power Ranger.  He went for the Power Ranger.

Do not adjust your set. Those are actual colours...

At the end of the party we had the party bags for everyone, and Sam wanted to give out pirate treasure, which the ever resourceful Hilary managed to ensure was possible.

‘Ollie, come and look at my balls….’

Out of the mouths of babes….  Well, 4 year olds at any rate.  On Tuesday night I returned home to find a highly excited Sam working away at a project with Granny-who-lives-up-the-big-hill.  Sam had spent his Christmas money on a ‘making’ project that GWLUTBH was obligingly helping him with – playing the role of the responsible adult.

The ‘making’ involved using moulds to cast and harden a jelly like substance that would then become a number of bouncy balls.  When the project was finished a proud Sam had made four colourful objects that actually looked rather impressive and worked!  Hence the completely innocent comment that was called out across the kitchen – ‘Ollie, cone and have a look at my balls!’.  Of course the innuendo was completely missed by Ollie and Sam, but enough to floor the adults for a while.

Auntie Jo’s Birthday treat for Jamie

Last weekend saw one of the most hotly anticipated events of the recent calendar for Jamie – it was the weekend where Auntie Jo, Uncle Jim and Gaz (who collectively seem to be an amorphous collegiate of Godparenting) fulfilled their promises of a day of treats for Jamie’s birthday.

Except it wasn’t a day, it was a weekend, because they owed Jamie about three years worth of these ‘day of treats’….!  It was glorious.  About a month ago Jamie got a letter in the post addressing him formally and requiring him to fill out a timetable that specified what he would do were he to take part in the perfect weekend, guided by the Jo, Jim and Gaz combo.  You can see the result of a month of decision making, mind changing and event management below:

A schedule the SAS would be proud of...

Lovely little touches in there include the addition of CKF on Friday evening – according to Jamie a cunning code to indicate that he would like to have KFC, without upsetting his brothers by writing it explicitly on the page.  You may not have worked out the code because it’s complicated – start from the middle letter and read to the right, then return to the first letter – you see what he did there? Alan Turing would probably be almost crying with joy at the fact that he had a junior code creator growing in his considerable shadow….

Anyway, the arrows, crossings out and question marks are all a testament to just how carefully this plan was devised.  I am writing this on the Thursday night before the actual weekend and scheduling the post to go up afterwards – by then we’ll have the pictures of the event itself to share.  I sat upstairs in his bedroom with him earlier on while he selected all of his clothes and we discussed the needs of the various phases of the weekend.  Fatherhood gold.  That little timetable captures such a part of Jamie it has already become a little family treasure.  Thanks Auntie Jo, Jim and Gaz.

Jamie Sport Billy

It’s 3.30pm on Saturday and I have literally just stopped taxi driving.  All of you who have children of a certain age will know what I mean, and we are just starting to find out just how much of your time as a parent is involved in driving from A to B. Then to C.  And D.  Back to A.  Etc.

Since the dawn of his life, Jamie has been obsessed with sport in any format, watching it, talking about it, playing it, reading about it and so on.  Currently he swims once a week, plays football twice a week, plays cricket twice a week and plays tennis once a week.  Those are just the clubs – when he is at home and the temperature is conducive he is also out in the garden kicking a ball, bouncing on the trampoline or doing sporty stuff.  It is a character trait he obviously gets from me….. (and I can say that on here, because you can’t see me loaf around the house playing X-Box….!)

Anyway, two recent bits of footage I thought would be nice to put on here are a moment of almost excellent sporting success (I have to say almost because typically the one wonder goal he scored last season with a header from a corner was the one wonder goal I didn’t have the camera pointed at…) where he passed the ball down the wing for his striker to slot into the corner – inches wide…..!

Boy of the week!

It’s fair to say that we are having an interesting time with Ollie and school at the moment.  There has definitely been an emotional reaction to the complications and routines disruption that occurred as a result of Archie’s stint in NICU and then back in hospital with Bronchialitis.

It was with a lot of fanfair then that he came home last Friday to announce that he was ‘Boy of the Week’ in his class.  We are all very pleased.  The honour of being such a boy requires that you look after a frog called ‘Delton’ over the weekend, and Ollie has taken this responsibility very seriously.  No fun has been allowed to occur without Delton joining in and photographic evidence being obtained.  You’ll be pleased to note that I’m not going to assault you with all the photos, instead I have chosen one that was taken on our walk at Hengistbury Head on Sunday morning to celebrate Sam and Hilary’s birthday.  I like this one because it captures Ollie to a T.

He laid Delton on a rock and told us to get a picture of him sunbathing.  It was about 2℃ and cloudy.  I said it wasn’t very fair for Delton to be sunbathing on his own, and so Ollie lay down and joined him.  Like any Boy of the Week should….

Gotta watch those UV rays....

UPDATE

I came home from work later in the week to find that the impact of Delton had continued influencing Ollie.  He has spent the last two evenings constructing a bed that Delton can take with him when he goes to people’s houses to make him more comfortable and to accompany this he has written his account of his time with Delton.  This is the contradiction within Ollie – he is easily the most caring and compassionate of our boys, full of affection for living things and nurturing in his outlook, however he is also the first one to start breaking things and trashing things in the garden….

Here’s Delton’s bed:

Archie – the smile

We know that development is going to be slower with Archie than we are used to with the others, so we are looking forward to those big moments more than usual, I suppose.  In anything we have read that seems to be a recurring theme – the celebration of milestones that perhaps are taken more for granted with children who do not have a diagnosis of one sort or another.

Anyway, for a little while now Archie has been giving us smiles – not full on, easy ones, but there is a glint in his eyes and you can see his expression change.  The first smile he did properly was for Dr. Cronin at the Child Development unit in Poole.  Not a bad person to smile for!  He’s still developing the smile, but since he was born I have been looking forward to this hugely because it is the first interaction we can have with him and it is a step towards Archie becoming a personality in his own right, as opposed to being a label of a syndrome.  We haven’t got a full smile on camera yet, but you can see that he’s having a go in this photo…

You should see his expression when I told him the punchline...

Happy Birthday Sam!!

With 7 people in our house, birthdays seem to come around rather regularly, and yesterday it was Sam’s turn.  The big number 4.  I remember when Jamie was 4, it seemed like the first ‘milestone’ age, probably because that signified that he was going to school soon.

One of about 3 cakes over the last few days....!

Anyway, we had a rather excited little man first thing in the morning, who came into our room and opened up his presents – basically almost the entire collection of Playmobil figures and vehicles that had anything to do with Police – we had helicopters, robbers, handcuffs, escape boats, motor bikes etc.  It was a busy day for law enforcement in our house…!!

The other things that tickled Sam’s fancy were costumes.  Sam is a dresser-upper.  It is quite common for him to wake up and decide that today he is going to be Batman, for example, and any costume is a winner in his eyes.  Earlier in the week Nicki and Neil bought him a knight’s costume, and so with the kind lending of Harry’s inflatable horse, he was quickly sorted and ready for a joust.

There are still several costumes to try on, including a police man with a flashing helmet.  Crime is already dropping in the area….  This morning we went for a lovely walk along Hengistbury Head and then stopped for breakfast in the cafe.  All in all, a great weekend.
