A memorable fortnight….

Wowzer – which I believe is what Dangermouse used to say, or was it Penfold?  Exactly two weeks ago to this moment we were sort of beginning to realise that despite all our expectations, Hilary was actually going into labour two and a half weeks early and we were going to be having our fifth child soon.  We had just called Hilary’s mum and she was making her way over from Devon to arrive and look after the four boys who had gone to bed.  We were quite blasé about the upcoming birth and generally quite relaxed – apart from the contraction stuff which was obviously not so peaceful…. however, it was clear.  Archie was on his way.

At about 11.30pm we drove over to Poole maternity unit and then at 2.21am on Wednesday 10th November Archie appeared in our world.  We were over the moon and looking forward to coming home with the final member of our family – intending to arrive before the boys woke up so that we could surprise them with the new addition to the family.  Over the next twelve hours things didn’t work out quite how we had planned, and the following days were a life experience, to say the least.

Fast forward (or rewind) just 1 week almost exactly and once again we were to find ourselves in Poole hospital on Tuesday night, this time in the Intensive Care Unit being informed that the chromosome test results confirmed the suspicions of the doctors that Archie had Down’s Syndrome.

Back to the present and we are at home, relaxing and looking forward to celebrating Archie’s fortnight anniversary.  Perhaps a more intense and rollercoaster two weeks would have been hard to forsee….!  I will write more about this time in future posts, however at the moment I am allowing a little time and perspective to pass so that the reflection is an honest and clear one.

What I would like to note at this point is that the kindness and generosity of friends and family has been wonderful.  We are incredibly grateful to all those who have been thinking of us, supporting us, doing things for us and sharing a level of friendship and general humanity that helps one realise just how privileged you are to have found yourself in the kind of community and circle of people that we are lucky enough to be friends with.

By way of example, yesterday a friend of ours, Lorna, came round with a wonderful present that seems to have perfectly caught a moment – it is about friendship, people, good fortune and kindness – all things we associate with the birth of Archie.  Lorna, for some reason, had checked this year’s Harrods Teddy Bear (who ever knew that there was such a thing?) and in a coincidence that puts a smile on our face found out that this year the bear has been called ‘Archie’.  So she bought one and appeared on our doorstep with him as a gift.  Wonderful.  Thank you everyone, your support has meant a great deal to us.

The ‘Joseph’ Rug

Hilary went to IKEA yesterday and came back with this innocuous little fluffy sheepskin rug.  For Archie.  None of the other brothers got a rug like this one when they were little….

He looks a bit sheepish to me....

It reminded me of the story of Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat where Jacob has 12 sons, one of whom is Joseph.  Joseph is his favourite and so he gets him a beautiful multicoloured coat to demonstrate his love.  The other brothers get insanely jealous and sell Joseph to some passing Israelites as a slave after initially planning to kill him.  I’m sure you’re familiar with the story.

‘Family Films’ becomes ‘J,O,S,H and Archie’

Two things have happened recently.  Firstly, we dissolved the company that was Family Films, the reason behind this blog in the first place.  Secondly, our fifth child, Archie, was born and subsequently diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome.

As I was reading through this blog’s previous entries before closing it down for the last time and deleting it, I realised that although it had been a commercial tool, there was a wealth of family history already beginning to pool within it – things that even 1 year later have been enjoyable to revisit and remember.

The birth of Archie has changed the future course of our lives in ways we do not yet know or understand.  I do know, however, that while we were waiting for the diagnosis results I read a number of other family’s blogs which covered the subject of Down’s either in passing or as a core purpose, and I found them very useful, engaging and interesting.

My Dad kept a diary that was passed to me and my sisters in our late teens and it is something I have meant to do for our family and children, but never got around to.  So, with the combination of my reluctance to close the preceeding blog entries down, the birth of our fifth and final child and the exciting prospect of the future years ahead as we see all 5 children grow into their adult lives I have decided to write that diary after all.  The ‘Family Films’ blog may be a gonner, but the phoenix that rises from the ashes is ‘J,O,S,H and Archie’ – a chronicle of our family life.

Time Out!!

Due to the birth of our fourth child and the renovation of our house, we are currently taking time out from the development of Family Films.  As a result we are not going to be updating this blog for a period of time as we need to concentrate upon our core business, Wicked Days Productions.

Thank you for visiting this site, and if you are interested to know more about what is going on then please go to our Wicked Days blog.  We look forward to getting back to work making great films about your family soon.  Thank you for your patience.

Wembley Stadium

Last Wednesday I had the privilege of going to see my first England international game.    The official purpose of the trip was to celebrate Jamie’s birthday, so obviously I had to take the little chap with me as well.  It was one of those classic moments in life when you just think ‘now why haven’t I done this before??’.  It was our first trip to the new Wembley and I was overflowing with excitement, not to mention the prospect of seeing Rooney, Beckham, Terry, Lampard, Ferdinand, Crouch and all the other names that I just never expected to see playing live football (one of the downsides of supporting Notts Forest).

Tickets go on sale tomorrow for the home match to Andorra on June 10th.  Only problem is that our next baby is due on the 13th…..  I’m thinking I may have to wait until Croatia in September to go to Wembley again!!  If you get a chance, I recommend it.  I’ve still got a smile on my face thinking about it now.

This is my last blog post from the home office.  I am about to dismantle the computer and put it into storage because they are knocking down the wall of the office tomorrow.  I will still be in contact via my laptop, but only when the dust and brick piles allow.  It will all be worth it in the end!!

Being absent

Apologies for the lack of blog entries recently.  Our building work is going along at a fine old pace and it is hard sometimes to find the computer under the dust sheets, concrete blocks and assorted building materials.  Once all the work is done I hope we will be back to business as usual.  We have a few more weeks living in the house and then we are moving out to become poor white trash in a static caravanPDE5 inhibitors sildenafil australia mainly restrict the production of PDE5 enzymes, if present can deter erection from happening. It’s all going off!!

Crikey. I came home from work last night and did the biggest double take I have done for a while. Now I know that the builders were starting this week, but it’s all going a little bit quicker than I thought!! Yesterday they pulled down trees, hedges, cleared buildings and removed glass. Today they performed tricks that David Copperfield would be proud of!! The garage just vanished. Here it is yesterday:

Tomorrow we draw pretty pictures on the floor where the foundation footings are going to go.  2 days in and only 4 months to go….  Thank goodness we’ve got Elisabeth and Dean’s wedding this weekend to take us away from this dusty site.  Leez Priory is a place we have been to a few times and we love doing two camera shoots there.  I hope we’ll have something to post to share it with you.

Introducing number 4….!!!!

OK.  Here he is!!  (And yes, I did say he – we are going to be a family of four boys).  In June we are going to be welcoming this little man into our lives.  baby-scanOut of all four of them, we have not had a scan picture that showed so much.  I remember the first time I looked at one of these and they seemed like a painting by some abstract artist, so for those who can’t see him (it’s like one of those ‘magic eye’ paintings that were all the rage a while ago..!!) his head is in the top right, his tummy occupies the middle and bottom left section his arm is in the middle at the top and his leg/thigh is on the left.  Baby number 4!!

Now, this also means that we may have to start a competition.  After naming three boys it is getting tougher to find a name for a fourth.  Don’t worry, you’ve got a while to think about it, but we would welcome any suggestions.  It needs to go with Jamie, Ollie and Sam and we don’t want to call it Butch.  (Ollie’s still pushing for Sonic Underground).  So, any ideas, drop us a line, we need all the help we can get……!!!

Building a new house….

Crikey!! Today we had a meeting with Kevin, our builder (and my cousin’s husband) to talk about our building project. For one year we have lived in our house without wallpaper, heating, gadgets etc. (actually I am exaggerating, however it’s closer to the truth than you might think).
Anyway, earlier on this week we found out that we had been granted planning permission to start the build and as a result of Hilary’s pregnancy we are fully on GO mode. We are hoping that it will be done before the baby arrives in June. Here’s our house a year ago when we moved into it…..

Another Family Films production – a baby!!!

Yesterday was a lovely day.  We started out by going for a walk in the freezing winds of Christchurch along the beautiful Hengistbury Head peninsula.  Ollie was on his new Christmas bike and Sam was on his trike for the first time.  Jamie was, as usual, powering along on his two wheeler.  We lasted about 5 minutes before the crying and misery started and eventually cut short the walk in order to head back into a cafe and warm up with hot chocolate.

We came home and started a fire while Hilary went for a jog and then we sat down for ‘special tea’, which in our house consists of Sausage, Chips and Baked Beans.  Lovely.  It was during the tea that we made an announcement – someone we knew was going to have a baby!!

‘Was it Auntie Ali?’  asked Jamie.  No.  Closer to our home than that.

‘I know’ shouted Ollie.  ‘Is it Reg?’  (Reg is our nearly 90 something male next door neighbour).  I don’t think Ollie has started biology yet in school…..

‘No, neither of those.  Our special news is that Mummy is going to have another baby, another brother or sister for you.  Isn’t that great news???’  There followed, as Harold Pinter would call it, a pause.

‘If it’s a boy can we call it Sonic Underground?’  asked Ollie.

We finished our ice cream and went into the lounge to watch Kung Fu Panda.  A lovely day.  And so that, in a nutshell, is our news.  Not that we might call our baby Sonic Underground, but that we’re having another in the first place.  4.  Nice round number.  Crikey!!
