Olympic Torch Relay Fun!

I love opportunities to celebrate and so last Friday afternoon I went to Peekes and brought Union Jack flags and a ‘Go for Gold’ helium balloon and on Friday night I got the drum down from Harry’s bedroom, found whistles for the Ollie and Sam, laid out red, white and blue clothes for the boys and me and went to bed feeling quite excited because on Saturday morning at 9.16am the Olympic torch would be coming into Christchurch.

….and so on Saturday morning we were all up and dressed ready for the excitement to begin.  Jez dropped Jamie off at the Scout hut so he could watch the torch with the cubs and then go on to cub camp and we then all stepped out of our front door, turned left, walked about 20 metres and found our spot on Barrack Road.

It has rained pretty much every day for the last month but today just when it mattered, the rain ceased and called a temporary truce whilst the Olympic torch shone its light through Christchurch.  And it was really exciting and memorable, much more exciting than I thought it would be and I am so pleased that we all made sure we were up and outside on the roadside to cheer, bang the drum, wave our flags and fly our ‘Go for Gold’ balloon .  So many people turned out throughout Christchurch to support the torch bearers who each had an amazing story of courage or citizenship to tell and had been chosen for their fortitude in overcoming illness or injury or their dedication to their communities by way of fundraising or pure hard work.

We positioned ourselves, along with most of the children and parents from the boys school to see our friend Sue run her leg of the torch relay.  Sue was nominated for her foster caring and it was amazing and emotional to see her holding the torch high, looking radiant and running proud along Barrack Road.

The motorbikes passed, the Lloyds and Coco Cola lorries blared out their music, Harry banged his drum, the boys hi fived policemen on bikes and then Sue got nearer and then she was gone.  The good natured crowds departed and Barrack Road went back to normal and our Saturday continued but I am so pleased we were there to watch this historic moment.

We went home and the rain returned, we sat and drank lots of tea and ate biscuits, watched the torch continue through Christchurch via ‘Torch Cam’ and then later went up to Christchurch Rec to join in FIT Christchurch and to get a hold of the Olympic torch and have our photo taken with Sue.

It was a memorable day and now we can’t wait for the Olympics to start…only one week and a day to go!
