Your first morning of secondary school happened so quickly. I barely had time to grab a few photos of you and hug you before you headed off with Jamie to meet Louis…..and I’m all kinds of butterflies in my stomach, excited for you and I’m also so sad but so proud to see you face your next step with confidence and independence.

To me you are still that toddler muddling all your words and sounds up as you desperately tried to tell the world all you knew, ‘ Hey mummy look at the sucker fish’ , ‘Look at the moth it’s frowning at me’.  You are that smiley, excitable 4 year old, who ran in to school eagerly and forgot to put his shoes on at play time.  But you have come so far from these memories.  Today you are quick witted, humorous, opinionated and passionate about so many things in life; already pushing the boundaries of what you have always known and you are ready for new challenges.  Your boundaries are changing and reshaping and you are so ready but our love for you remains the same. You went to bed last night – nervous, curious, excited and you work up older, more independent.

Your last year of Primary school was a rocky road for you and for us all and we are so proud of how you coped with the changes.  I guess sometime you have to take the rocky long road, the hard road with no short cuts or fast tracks, you gotta walk through the fire and the doubt to get to where you want to go so you can be the person you want to be. A set back, an opportunity to reflect and dream bigger, to not let others put limits to the thing you can do, to have the courage to keep going.  We saw the real you at Sandford and how happy in learning and friendship you were when you were free to laugh, to be challenged, entertained and delighted and we know that this will continue for you in your new school.  All the moves you make will eventually even out and you have a bright and sunny future ahead.

I love that you are tender, loving and gentle, that you always have a contribution to make, that you love to dance, act and sing, that you think of everything in life as art, notice little random details and that you think so deeply about the world around you.  You have the ability to let your imagination run wild and you have the confidence to believe.  You have a sappy heart just like your Mummy and I will always praise this goodness in you. We are all hugely proud of who you are and the wonderful being you’re becoming.  Watching you grow is the most fulfilling thing for us and I hope that you always remember where you came from but never lose sight of where you want to go.

Ollie, I am making this parenting job up as I go along and I definitely don’t get it right all of the time – but know that I will always make room for your plans, hopes and dreams and do my upmost to support you in them; no matter how busy life gets, you and your brothers will always be my most important work. You will always be worthy of all that I can give and I will support you every step of the way but your successes and achievements are yours.

Above all Ollie, have fun – find things and people that make you happy and enjoy every moment of doing things and being with them.  If things are not going well, look for ways that you can change them and talk to us to see if we can help you.  Together we won’t always make thing perfect but we can definitely always look for ways to make thing good.
