Choir of the Year 2016

Choir of the Year 2016 – Sunday 17th April  New Forest Children’s Choir

The Lord Bless You & Keep You / Tomorrow / The Wreck

Big congrats to Sam and Ollie for getting up so early today, and to Hil for doing the same and being the moral support all the way to Basingstoke for the heats of a big competition. Excited to say that their choir – the ‘New Forest Children’s Choir’ made it through to the next round of the BBC Children’s Choir of the Year – very exciting and well deserved. This video was recorded by one of the parents in the audience, amazing to think that most of them are still in primary school.

 Adjudicators feedback – Stephen Connolly

“I’m of the firm opinion that if a group of singers in the space of 8 minutes can make you laugh, smile and bring a tear to your eye – then they’re doing something right – YOU are doing something right!!! Because I had a tear, I had a smile, I had a bit of a laugh actually and there’s something very beautiful about the way you present yourselves.  You look fantastic by the way, but there’s something very special about the way you produce your sound and I think it’s probably down to that lady there!!  Your vowels are beautiful and they take me back to an era of singing that I grew up with, which is the sound of King’s College, Cambridge and David Willcocks, back in the 1960’s and your sound is beautiful!  You could hear a pin drop back here. It’s a special sound. You can hear people appreciating this at a gut level – WOW! FANTASTIC!

You have lovely part singing – all the technical bits to your singing are well in hand and I thought you had a fantastic programme – from the sublime to the ridiculous! As it’s just been said, choosing a programme for a competition is very difficult, usually it’s the stuff you’re working on or you know. You’ve obviously thought really hard about this and each piece really took us on a journey and the whole performance was a fantastic journey!

I felt privileged to be here – to hear you!

 FANTASTIC – WELL DONE!”

The Lord Bless You & Keep You:

Gosh you make an amazingly well crafted sound.

Your vowels are beautifully shaped.

Do watch the work on the upper register – drop the jaw.

A musical journey of the most beauty – thank you.

Fantastic duet!

Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day:

Another magical musical journey.

You have a lovely homogeneity of sound, clarity and well balanced part singing.

Perhaps a little more work on dynamic variation, but generally fantastic performance!

 The Wreck:

What fun! Love the ‘action’.

Watch the acceleration.

Great ending!    Well done you!

The Lord Bless You & Keep You:

A beautiful sweet tone with a tremendous warm care.

Intonation occasionally wavered at the top BUT you are clearly in the hands of a top vocal coach!

Lovely.

Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day:

Great touch quality;

Do try to make as much of every opportunity to make the contrasts in this piece happen.

Top register notes were FAB!

 The Wreck:
