Yesterday we finally we got an opportunity to watch the film ‘Miss Pettigrew lives for a day’.  We have been very excited about watching it as my cousin Tom is in it!!  He has taken his first Hollywood role playing the character of Phil, one of the leading lady’s would be suitors.

So he started off lying on his back. Then he crawled.  Later he began to walk.  Today the horizon became that little bit closer for Sam as he got his first set of wheels.  Well, to be more accurate, he managed to hitch a lift on the back of Hilary’s wheels, but nevertheless, Sam the adventurer has opened a new chapter in his life.

So should we be worried??

As you will know, Ollie has been at school for nearly four weeks so far.  He has settled in very well and is a very confident young man.  So much so that he leaves Hil on the other side of the road and crosses at the lollipop man crossing and runs off into the playground on his own.  Not interested in holding Mummy’s hand, it seems.

Anyway, occasionally he decides that his parents are important enough to share a small piece of information with about his day at school; his latest gem being that apparently he told a ‘bigger boy‘ to ‘go away‘ (but in slightly stronger terms) the other day and was told off for it.  Rightly so!!  He can’t tell us where he got it from but was very unaware that it was a naughty thing to say.  We hope this is not a sign of things to come……

On the other hand, when he hadn’t lined up at the end of the school day to leave the classroom to meet the parents, his class teacher, the lovely Mrs Sibbald, called out his name.  Apparently a small voice anonymously replied; ‘Oliver Payne will be with you shortly, he is just finishing on the toilet…!’  On the plus side, he won the trophy at football today so it is our first week with both trophies on the mantelpiece (Jamie won his football trophy on Friday).

Following a few phone conversations I’m a bit excited to be able to report that I’ve again been asked to appear at the National Institute of Videography (IOV) convention on October 15th and 16th at the Ricoh arena near Coventry.

I’ll be giving a seminar for the third year in a row to a hall of professional videographers and enthusiasts.  The IOV is the largest organisation in the country dedicated to supporting and developing professional and enthusiast videographers.  I’m quite chuffed to have been billed as ‘back by popular demand….’ which is nice!!

There will also be a panel I’m on at a ‘Question Time’ type session where anyone is able to ask questions and find out how we do things.  This is a bit ironic as we were members of the audience at the first program in the new series of actual BBC ‘Question Time’ which was filmed in Bournemouth last Thursday.  Unfortunately, we weren’t asked to ask a question.  Maybe next time..!!

Like Spandau Ballet said – ‘Gold’!!’

Last night we had a wicked evening round at our friends Jo and Jim’s house.  They’re the ones you can see in our sample film – ‘Sophie’s first year’.  Anyway, it was a celebration all round as it was the first time that we were able to meet Andy since his Olympic triumph.  Naturally enough we made sure that we were playing Spandau Ballet’s ‘Gold’ when he walked through the front door…..

In typical fashion he acted as though all our excitement was a little bit unneccesary, however when Jamie presented him with a picture he had drawn of the Olympic rings and Andy receiving his medal, he asked if we wanted to see ‘the medal’.  Of course, we said, expecting him to go and open up a safe in the back of his car or something, however he just dipped into his pocket and pulled it out!!

There then followed lots of photos with us all pretending to be Olympians before quite a bit of unsportsman-like drinking occurred amidst lots of brilliant story telling from Andy.

September 11th.

For obvious reasons this date will live in infamy and we will carry it with us through the rest of our lives.  7 years ago today Hilary was pregnant with Jamie and I remember worrying about what sort of a world we were bringing a child into.  Were we doing the right thing??

It was clear that things were going to change and that this was a major event that would to a small or large extent shape events in our lives.  I’m not convinced that we or our governments are reacting in the right way and am disturbed by the idea that our children are going to grow up in a society that is not as free as the one I grew up in – but then I grew up in a village which had a local shop, 2 pubs, a cricket team and a social conscience.  They seem to be fewer and fewer in number nowadays.

We went to a christening at the weekend where I had a fantastic chat with my Gran, who is approaching 90 years old.  She is confused by the changes in this country and can’t quite adapt to all of them.  After a couple of glasses of wine she talked in great depth about her family’s history and I learnt a great deal – a fascinating conversation.  It was a great weekend, a proper family occasion where we got to spend time and talk about things.  I’m hoping to have a chance to film her talking about all of her family – one day it will make fascinating viewing for our children and beyond.  If I film it I will post parts of the footage here.

So the day that Hilary has been dreading for a while has finally arrived.  This morning we all went as a family to walk Ollie in for his first ever day in school.  On the one hand that doesn’t seem too remarkable but when you realise that every day up until today in his four-plus years of life he has been around Hilary mostly all day, everyday, and now he will never spend that concentrated span of time at home again in his life, it becomes a very important milestone in his and our lives.

Hilary was tearful, I was reflective and Ollie honestly couldn’t wait for us to leave – if he could have left us in the car park and gone into school on his own he would have done.  I think this is a good thing as it shows he is confident and ready for the new challenges.  I just hope he isn’t too confident..!!  It’s an obscure moment of solidarity that we share with many other parents around the country today.  We may not know each other but we are all going through similar things, some finding it easier than others.  As I said earlier in the week, things move on and we have to adapt.

Big moments in family history

Well, aside from the fact that our business goes live in 2 days time, which hopefully will be an important moment in our history, there are currently events unfolding of a much greater personal magnitude.

As I write, Hilary is doing a trial run of the bike ride to school which will become a regular feature starting this Wednesday.  Jamie will be starting in Year 2, but it is about to be Ollie’s first day at school and so they have all got kitted out in the cycling gear and gone on a time trial!  Many of you reading this will know the feelings we are going through at the moment – excitement, nervousness, fear, anticipation….

Ollie of course can’t wait for the big adventure to begin and Jamie is looking forward to having his brother in school, although who knows when he will change his mind after the reality kicks in!!

Not only that, but Hilary’s mum, Nicky, officially retired yesterday and is, I hope, recovering from her celebrations. Ironically she worked in a school, so as one person leaves another one begins – another part of the cycle of life and the constantly developing nature of our family history.

Jet lag??

The title of this post is actually misleading, as we haven’t returned on a jet from anywhere.  We returned home from our holiday in France yesterday in a solid 13 hour drive and opened our front door at 03.30am – very exciting for Jamie and Ollie who thought we were on a mission to attack a secret base of something, however it has been a long time since we were so grateful to collapse into our warm bed.

Today has been a whirlwind of hangover like surreality where things take just a while longer to register then usual – the clearest example of which is seeing our first UK directed coverage of the Olympics where the glorious Team GB touched down at Heathrow and our friend Andy emerged to stand on the rostrum as a gold medal winner.  We have no doubt that he is currently celebrating his victory in suitable style and hope that this is a portent of things to come in Weymouth during the sailing of London 2012.
