Sam learns to ride a bike

I’m on half term at the moment which means lots of things, lovely and not so.  It means that I don’t have to leave the house at 6.30 in the morning, before most of the children are awake, and return at about 6.30 in the evening, when at least two of them are usually asleep.  It means that I can cuddle Harry and Archie in bed in the mornings, while lying in there myself…  It means I can stay up late and play COD6 on the XBox.  It means that I can be around and interrupt Hilary’s routine and military style planning just by being there because it invariably means that I’m getting in the way….  It means that I can spend some time thinking about stuff and generally having a bit of a relax.

Building up for more balance

The other lovely thing is that it means I sometimes am around to capture one of the milestones in one of our children’s lives, if the timing is right and the conditions are favourable, and yesterday we saw one of those little milestones emerge – Sam made his first tentative pedals towards being a little independent cyclist.  (Excuse the weird noises being made by me in the film….)

We have been going to Hengistbury Head for a while now with a modified bike that I removed the pedals from.  This has helped Sam to develop some balance and the rather useful trick of looking in the direction he wants to cycle.  We are hoping that by the time we go on holiday to France he will be proficient enough to explore the campsite with his older brothers.  Meanwhile, Harry continues to develop and grow, exploring and taking on bigger challenges – like the big slide that he has just started going down, and the monkey bars which, given two minutes unattended, he will be up and over and then stuck, shouting for help!

Congrats Sam! A true biker now. All achieved without shoes, as usual!! Well done.

Must admit to a certain gladness that the film ran out on Harry’s endeavour on the monkey bars. Nervous Godmother!!
