A few hours ago a very intriguing article appeared online reportedly written by an insider at Sony Music UK. The ‘insider’ (if it is a genuine person) made various claims about this year’s BGT competition and announced the result – which is interesting as the final is not until Saturday…. I’m cynical enough about the business behind these shows to believe that this story may well be correct or at least contain elements of truth, if so then I hope this is the beginning of the end for it – even if there is no shred of truth there seem to me to be far too many conflicts of interest within these types of show where the judges/producers also sign the acts and control their careers within their own companies – at some point the interests of the artists themselves will surely be sidelined. In any case the mass exposure of children as young as the ones being put onto the national stage also raises ethical questions, whatever is said about the wishes of the children themselves.
In the interests of fairness I should add that Syco, the production company run by Simon Cowell, have released a statement saying ‘There is no truth in this story whatsoever. Ronan first came to Syco/Sony’s attention when he entered this year’s competition.’
‘Syco/Sony Music will not hesitate to take whatever legal action is appropriate to prevent further publication of these unfounded allegations.’
Whatever the facts are, this all reminds me of the exploitation of Bros, the first boy band that launched a thousand others. (Yeah, yeah, I know there were the Beatles etc, but Bros was a new form of commercialism in the music industry, and the first massive band I remember from my youth).
