What’s going on in Egypt?

I’m trying to write a presentation for an interview I have to do tomorrow, but have been distracted by the Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak’s speech to the nation (and the world) about whether he is going to stand down.

I was struck by this image from the BBC News showing him making his speech live alongside a shot of the crowds in Tahrir Square in Cairo.

To be honest, I don’t know a great deal about the politics of the area and what I do know has come from the news of the last weeks, following on from the uprising in Tunisia etc. so I feel I have an awareness but not an understanding because unfortunately the papers aren’t reliable anymore and TV news now has an agenda, however, what I did think, again and again was, Is this another Caecescau moment?

I remember watching as Nicolae Ceausescu made that last speech from the balcony of Republican Square and was amazed at what was happening and what subsequently happened, not because I understood it, but because it was obviously something pretty amazing in a whole new sense of understanding the world.   Even as a 14 year old I realised the potential fragility between the rulers and the ruled, once a critical mass was reached.

I can’t help noticing the similarities between the two situations 22 years later.
