Keep it in the family – Christmas Special

So back in June Ollie auditioned to be the choir boy in this game show.

He was successful which meant that he got to spend a day in the studio filming this short clip and falling through a trap door.  Lots of fun – however it was all in front of a live studio audience and all very weird because as it was for the christmas special he had to sing ‘The Snowman’.

Anyway, Ollie loved it and here are some photos to remind him of this crazy experience – it’s funny where life takes you.  Ollie seems to take it all in his stride!

Off you went today, into the real world to flourish. I want to shout ‘slow down baby boy! slow down!’ but I don’t and I won’t because you’re not a baby.  You’re a little boy, ready for that bit of independence, following in your brothers footsteps, brightening up everyone’s day with your wave and smile – showing people – anybody – from the postman, to the elderly man at the bus stop, to the teenage boy on his bike that you see them, that you recognise them and that each and everyone of them is important to you.  I need to share you with the world,  it is right for you and it is right for me .  So I’m fighting the urge to keep you home, nestled in the safety of these walls.

My little but big boy – I  remember the days after you were born, as if it were yesterday and yet it feels a million miles away.  So clearly rocking you in the darkness of our hospital room – repeating to myself ‘everything will be ok’ and the funny thing is, it is ok, it really is.  I only wish I’d blinking known how lucky we were then, four  and three quarter years ago.  It only feels like yesterday that we packed up from hospital with you and came home to a special party and now I’m thinking of packed lunches for you.  Time is both our most amazing gift and our biggest adversary .. but I don’t think I’d have things any other way.

Last night, I lay next to you as you went to sleep, feeling your warm breath on my cheek, counting your splattering of freckles, relishing in the charms of the present but also hoping beyond hope that we have got this whole school thing as right as possible for you. Sometimes the incredible sense of awe and responsibility that only exists when caring for a little person is overwhelming.  You have gone to the same school as your brothers and I am hopeful and grateful to all the professionals involved in your care.   You will learn so much from your peers but equally I strongly believe that they will learn a lot from you.  And Harry, your biggest fan and strongest supporter, is so proud to have you at school with him.  In fact all your brothers are.  If Ollie and Jamie could have been there to walk you in they would have and Sam made it his personal mission to get the right one to one for you, whilst he was on the school council.  Inclusion at its best makes this world a better, more tolerant and compassionate place for all.

Thank you Archie, for being my biggest inspiration. You teach us all to live in the moment, to celebrate the smallest of achievements.  Your laughter and happiness is contagious and your determination infectious.  You make me push harder and remind me to believe and keep going.  As you take your next steps, turning finally, unstoppably, into a big kid, my heart is so, so, so full it’s bursting with pride – Keep on pushing forward, challenging yourself and creating your own happiness so you can be the best that you can be.  We know that you have so much to give.

Archie we will always be your biggest cheerleaders to secure a happy and fulfilling life for you but you are also blessed with a huge crew of family, friends and professionals who adore you and together we will all teach you to soar and you will!

…and I picked you up today at 12.30.  We hugged and you put you soft, tiny hand in mine and we skipped up the road and you answered ‘Yes’ to all my questions and then I put you into the car and got into the driver seat and turned around to check you were ok and you just smiled and laughed…no words…but I knew that you were very happy.

Maybe we could all learn from Archie .. smile more …talk less.  Well done Archie! You did it! One morning at a time.  It’s ok, it’s ok, it’s ok and I’m beginning to mean it.

Summer 2015

IMGP3488

Summer suits our boys; the unhurried rhythm, the wide open spaces, the nature, the independence not to mention the say ‘yes’ moments to ice cream nearly everyday. They are in their element and we are all together. I wish that we could bottle the summer feeling and keep it with us all year – the sun and wind in our hair, the sea and salt, the lighter days, happy memories, friends, family and freedom – We need to remember days that feel like this and try and bring some of it into our everyday.

A few of this years favourite summer snaps…

And just like that summer was over.  See ya next year! Hello school! Time to officially remember what day of the week it is. Thankfully we have this wonderful thing called ‘everyday life’ to return to. The comforts of home, the settling back into routines, the promise of a glorious new school year ahead – we have the ‘everyday’ and we love that too. As much as I love the special weekends, holidays away, celebratory dates – life is made up of a whole lot of nows that we must recognise and enjoy.

Dear Ollie

You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way! Dr Seuss, Oh the Places You’ll go!

IMG_3895

Your first morning of secondary school happened so quickly. I barely had time to grab a few photos of you and hug you before you headed off with Jamie to meet Louis…..and I’m all kinds of butterflies in my stomach, excited for you and I’m also so sad but so proud to see you face your next step with confidence and independence.

To me you are still that toddler muddling all your words and sounds up as you desperately tried to tell the world all you knew, ‘ Hey mummy look at the sucker fish’ , ‘Look at the moth it’s frowning at me’.  You are that smiley, excitable 4 year old, who ran in to school eagerly and forgot to put his shoes on at play time.  But you have come so far from these memories.  Today you are quick witted, humorous, opinionated and passionate about so many things in life; already pushing the boundaries of what you have always known and you are ready for new challenges.  Your boundaries are changing and reshaping and you are so ready but our love for you remains the same. You went to bed last night – nervous, curious, excited and you work up older, more independent.

Your last year of Primary school was a rocky road for you and for us all and we are so proud of how you coped with the changes.  I guess sometime you have to take the rocky long road, the hard road with no short cuts or fast tracks, you gotta walk through the fire and the doubt to get to where you want to go so you can be the person you want to be. A set back, an opportunity to reflect and dream bigger, to not let others put limits to the thing you can do, to have the courage to keep going.  We saw the real you at Sandford and how happy in learning and friendship you were when you were free to laugh, to be challenged, entertained and delighted and we know that this will continue for you in your new school.  All the moves you make will eventually even out and you have a bright and sunny future ahead.

Just by doing things, you’ll find things that you are great at.  And remember, ‘ you can be, a great, many things’ – you can enjoy learning, play sport, play music, do acting, be arty, be quiet, be loud and be geeky – you do not have to define yourself by one thing.

Secondary school will be fun but be in no doubt that you will make mistakes but know that we will always be there to help you and to make sure that home is the most comforting place to be.  Remember two things Ollie – the Navy Seal mantra – ‘proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance’ and ‘Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want later.’ A. I love that you are tender, loving and gentle, that you always have a contribution to make, that you love to dance, act and sing, that you think of everything in life as art, notice little random details and that you think so deeply about the world around you.  You have the ability to let your imagination run wild and you have the confidence to believe.  You have a sappy heart just like your Mummy and I will always praise this goodness in you. We are all hugely proud of who you are and the wonderful being you’re becoming.  Watching you grow is the most fulfilling thing for us and I hope that you always remember where you came from but never lose sight of where you want to go.

Ollie, I am making this parenting job up as I go along and I definitely don’t get it right all of the time – but know that I will always make room for your plans, hopes and dreams and do my upmost to support you in them; no matter how busy life gets, you and your brothers will always be my most important work. You will always be worthy of all that I can give and I will support you every step of the way but your successes and achievements are yours.

Above all Ollie, have fun – find things and people that make you happy and enjoy every moment of doing things and being with them.  If things are not going well, look for ways that you can change them and talk to us to see if we can help you.  Together we won’t always make thing perfect but we can definitely always look for ways to make thing good.

No matter how big you get will always be the perfect size to hug and we will always be there in the background supporting you.  Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy xxxxx

Happy World Down Syndrome Awareness Day

We don’t really do anything amazingly special to celebrate ‘World Down Syndrome’ Day, but the date 21st March (to represent three copies of the 21st chromosome) will always hold a special place in my heart.  A simple reminder of how lucky we are to have Archie.  This day to me, represents the love we have for Archie and how fiercely proud we are to be his parents, how much his siblings and family adore him and how our friends embrace, support, encourage him and strive to include him.

But on a wider scale it celebrates the beauty in difference where individuals with the diagnosis of Down Syndrome are recognised for their worth, uniqueness, beauty, hopes and dreams.  For their feelings, individual personalities, strengths and weaknesses and their contribution that they can make to the world.  Everyone has a gift to share with the world : it just needs to be recognised.
